% Task force completes HST servicing mission study;
% STS-57 mission status;
% HST makes yet another discovery.
The task force appointed by NASA Administrator Dan Goldin to review
plans for the Hubble Space Telescope servicing mission has concluded
that the upcoming mission is achievable. This conclusion was based on
the fact that the spacecraft and most of its subsystems were designed
for on-orbit maintenance.
However, the task force did point out that the mission will be complex
and that it will require more spacewalks than any other mission to
date. With this in mind, the task force recommended that a second
servicing mission be planned to complete tasks that were not done
during the upcoming STS-51 mission

As June 3 approaches, technicians at the Kennedy Space Center plan to
begin aft engine compartment closeouts, install the ordnance and
pressurize the hypergolic fuel and oxidizer tanks. Workers have
completed the helium signature test and purged the hypergolic lines.
Space Shuttle Endeavour is scheduled to complete the STS-57 mission on
June 11 with primary landing planned for the Kennedy Space Center.
This mission is the fourth flight for the Space Shuttle Endeavour and
the 56th flight of the Space Shuttle System.

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has discovered a pinwheel-shaped disk of
gas surrounded by clusters of young stars as a result of the collision
of two disk-shaped galaxies. The galaxy merger occurred about 1
billion years ago and triggered an infall of the gas which fueled the
birth of new stars around the center of the galaxy.
The results were presented in a press conference yesterday at NASA
Headquarters. This discovery provides evidence for explaining the
origin of giant elliptical galaxies. Hubble's discovery is the latest
in a series of disk-like structures that that the space telescope has
uncovered at the cores of galaxies. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
